Ian Carr's seminal book Music Outside
First published in 1973, this was the definitive work on contemporary British jazz at that time. Probably the greatest book on contemporary British jazz ever written and a second edition was republished by Northway in January 2008 for the first time in 35 years. The new edition includes an additional updating chapter by Roger Cotterrell. Contains excellent photographs and a superb discography. It has been described by King Crimson biographer Sid Smith in his KCNN diary for 14th May 2003 as "a fascinating overview of contemporary jazz in the UK. Importantly, it described the emergence and evolution of a musical vocabulary which wasn't entirely dependent on the USA for its legitimacy". Smith then goes on to say how he managed to track down a copy of 'Music Outside' (he had lost his own copy and had to borrow a copy for his research), however it was for sale for "well over 100"!
